Paleontologists have uncovered a fossilized meeting of the NDP Party in
the Burgess Shale.
"We're
really excited about this discovery," said Dr. Heinrich Mueller,
head of the digging operation, "now we can add this strange species
to the other oddities of Pre-Cambrian life."
The Burgess
Shale is a treasure trove of fossils from more than 505 million years
ago, before most modern species started to evolve.
"The
NDP as a political force has been mostly extinct in Canadian politics
for many years now. Here we can actually see them in their heyday, debating
union rights, medicare, and other items of the social democratic left,"
said Dr. Mueller. "The sense of their self importance was very high
-- look how this specimen is raising his finger to make a point -- he
really believes he can make a difference in the working man's life."
"It's
the lack of self-interest that really interests me," said Dr. Cameron
McGillis, another scientist at the dig. "These political creatures
thought they were the future, that history would show them to be right."
"Now,
of course, we can see that history had the last laugh," he added.
