| CANADA'S SOURCE FOR EGYPTIAN HUMOUR, PARODY, AND SATIRE
GIZA, EGYPT-- It took the Egyptians centuries to build the Great Pyramids, but they'll be able to have them all reshingled in less than six months.
Thanks to donations from Canadian lumber companies, Egypt will soon be able to have most of their ancient pyramids reshingled, protecting them against the harsh Egyptian elements. In May, Canada sent a workforce of thirty-six roofers to install weather-treated yellow-cedar shingles on most of Egypt's eighty "royal pyramids," beginning with the three smaller pyramids built for King Khufu's queens, situated next to the Great Pyramid at Giza. The Great Pyramid itself, which took 20 years and 100,000 men to build, should take three weeks to shingle. Mark Bergevin, a 12-year roofer from Edmonton, is delighted to be part of the goodwill project. "I'm just glad to do my part," said Mark, 31. " I know these pyramids have been really taking a hit with all that exposed stone." "I'm glad we started when we did," said British Columbia roofer Dennis Cole. "If we had waited much longer, who knows how much more these pyramids would have eroded." The Egyptian government is grateful for the Canadian assistance. "It is important that we protect our ancient and historic monuments against the merciless Egyptian weather," said Safwat Mubarak, minister responsible for the project. "Without these shingles, wind, hail, and sandstorms could irreparably damage our fragile wonders, which have stood for over 2,000 years." The lesser pyramids will be fitted with more suitable cedar shakes. Bergevin estimates that the new shingles "should hold" for about 20 years. "Too bad them ancient Egyptians didn't know about treated lumber," added Bergevin. As part of
the international restoration, plans are also underway by the French government
to have the Sphinx lacquered and the Italians are scheduled to have the
temples in Luxor repainted later this summer.
