The Beaver Patrol

by Denis Milchuck.

What has happened to young Canada's soul?

I don't know about you, but Canada's youth looks about as out of place as Anne Murray performing at the Soul Train Music Awards.

What has happened to the energy and vibrance of our young people?

When did they stop dreaming of being the next Timothy Findley, put down their writing pens, and pick up Playstation controllers? When did they stop dreaming of being the next Zit Remedy and start dreaming of running the next BigMoney.com that they saw on Traders?

What has happened to our humour and creativity?

The Kids In The Hall have wandered away, SCTV has gone off the air, and I'm pretty sure that Wayne and Shuster are dead now, probably doing bad comedy routines up in the sky. When did they stop following that voice that keeps on calling them and travel the nation like the Littlest Hobo and simply become content with watching shows on the Travel Network from the familiar ass-groove on their living room chair?

It just seems to me that our young people are more concerned with their GPA than their actual understanding and appreciation of the subject matter.

If our nation's youth doesn't attain a collective cultural soul soon, it may end up as somber as the mood of a Leonard Cohen song. Let's just hope that our cultural future never becomes as bleak as what's under Ashley MacIssac's kilt.
