| CANADA'S SOURCE FOR USER FRIENDLY HUMOUR, PARODY, AND SATIRE
NEW WESTMINSTER, BC-- No one could have predicted that a few random doodlings would turn into the commercial success that is Friendly Circus.
Friendly Circus is the online comic strip about a group of wacky zoological employees and the zany antics of a little creature known only as the Sock Monkey. J.D. "Illiad" Frazer, creator of Friendly Circus, is still amazed at how popular the comic strip is, and in particular the popularity of the Sock Monkey. "The Sock Monkey was created from the unwashed clothes in a laundry hamper," said J.D. "He's a cute little critter who swings by his sock tail and tries not to get into trouble...which is rare." J.D. started the comic strip four years ago, while working as a brine engineer at the Vancouver Aquarium. "I just had an idea one day about the funny people who work here, and at the Vancouver Zoo," said J.D. "I drew a few panels about the goings-on at the zoo, and put them up on the bulletin board in the employee lunchroom. People wanted more!" Ever since then, Friendly Circus has been a favourite stop for Internet surfers. The Friendly Circus website gets a whole lot of hits every month, and J.D. gets e-mail from zoo employees all over the world. "I'll get people e-mailing me from the San Diego Zoo telling me how funny the strip is, because it's the same stuff that happens at their zoo," added J.D. "That's the best thing about Friendly Circus--people can relate to the crazy zoo stuff all over the world." Throughout everything, J.D. remains a down-to-earth guy. When he's not writing, drawing stories, or playing with his monkey, he's travelling around the world visiting zoos and wildlife preserves, promoting the animals. But he still prefers the peace and comfort of his computer room, where Friendly Circus comes to life. "I almost went bananas getting through the first year, if you'll excuse the pun," said J.D. "It's not easy coming up with 365 original jokes each year, about a zoo." Friendly
Circus is about ready to publish its third book, Swinging Without
A Net. The first two books sold a whole bunch, and were both on the
zoologists' best-sellers list.
