AKRON, OH-- Randy and Sissie Blumfeld discussed at length the merits of children's television programming before the birth of their daughter Christina, but Sissie never expected Randy would obsess so much over it. The Blumfelds had their child seven weeks ago, and ever since the baby's arrival, Randy has been glued to Treehouse TV and PBS, watching hour upon hour of pre-school entertainment.
"It was very ambitious of Randy to devote his spare time to researching potential shows for Christina to watch," said Sissie, who is on parental leave from her job as a dietician. "However, in the past two weeks, he seems to be a little more than absorbed in the actual shows. In fact, he'll yell and point at the television telling Blue [Blue's Clues] where to look for the clue." Randy, who works as a delivery driver for Hostess Foods, thinks it's important to embrace education with your children. "Why just the other day, I learned how to make egg carton Xmas ornaments while watching 'Crazy Quilt'," said the 28-year-old. "This is the sort of instructional broadcasting I lacked while I was growing up." Sissie is worried that her husband is becoming a little too involved with kid's television, and isn't spending enough time watching programming for his own age group. "Last Sunday he watched two hours of 'Bear In The Big Blue House', while the Bengals game was on," said Sissie. "And he's been leaving work early so that he can watch 'It's Itsy Bitsy Time'. He's even starting to tape 'Thomas The Tank Engine' reruns." Sissie doesn't think Randy is spending enough time with his friends either. "He cancelled poker night so that he could stay home and watch Songs From The Big Comfy Couch which he bought earlier that day on VHS," she said. "This stuff goes way beyond what the Children's Television Workshop provided my generation," added Randy. "In fact, with the exception of maybe 'Teletubbies'--which can be quite fascinating at times, except for all the repetition--modern children's programming goes way beyond what we could imagine when I was a kid. And it's amazing the leaps they've made with muppet technology." "It
looks like I'm going to be raising two children for now,"
sighed Sissie.
