| CANADA'S SOURCE FOR POPCORN HUMOUR, PARODY, AND SATIRE
A THEATRE NEAR YOU-- There was a lot of hype surrounding the latest "popcorn movie" that was released into theatres worldwide during the summer. Critics had hailed it as a box-office success--a fresh feature with a lot of flavour. They said that it took you away from the world outside the cinema. They said it was a delicious film that, for two hours, could make you forget about your problems and let you sit back and enjoy.
There was more than a kernel of truth to those statements. "I'll admit that this movie wasn't quite what I expected," said George Camber, movie enthusiast. "The reviews said this was The Popcorn Movie, and they weren't full of hot air. The trailers were a little dry, but the teasers were really buttered up, and for once they didn't leave me holding the bag." At first, George thought that this movie would be something like The Mummy Returns, or Lara Croft: Tomb Raider, true popcorn movies that he watched over the summer. "When I saw The Mummy Returns it was action-packed from start to finish," said George. "That was what I would have previously referred to as a 'popcorn movie.' But The Popcorn Movie was truly about popcorn--beginning to end. It was a real treat. Heck, even Orville Redenbacher would've been proud." George didn't feel deceived by the advertising campaign, or strung along by the publicity prior to The Popcorn Movie's release. "No, not really," said George, who goes to the movies at least three times a month. "You have to take it with a grain of salt. Now, when The Avengers came out, I was really disappointed. The bottom really fell out of that one. That was supposed to be a popcorn movie. Even with an evil Sean Connery, it couldn't satisfy my appetite for adventure. It left me feeling empty inside." How will The Popcorn Movie measure up against the big-budget blockbusters that will be served-up during the Christmas season? "It will be hard to draw a comparison," said George, licking his fingers in anticipation. "There are so many popcorn movies coming out, and the theatres are always cramming them down your throat. But, up against The Lord Of The Rings? Man, that's tough to swallow. Sometimes though, you just have to make concessions." George is
considering purchasing The Popcorn Movie on DVD when it comes
out early next year, topping off his collection.
