Mama Mia!

BACKSTAGE-- Stephen Webbing has always been a huge fan of the mega rock group Queen, but he regrets that he never got the chance to see them perform live. When lead singer Freddie Mercury died in 1991, Stephen knew he had missed his chance. But ten years later, his aspirations rose once again when he heard that an impersonator rock band, Not Quite Queen, was coming to town, and that he would be attending their concert.

Stephen Webbing (right) relishes his time backstage, enjoying a drink with Freddie Mercury impersonator Clyde Steenmuiller.

Stephen won tickets and a backstage pass to the Not Quite Queen concert from a local radio station after he was able to correctly identify several other tribute bands.

"It was a thrill to win," said Stephen, a huge admirer of all genres of music impersonators. "Their concert was killer, and they played the best imitation version of 'Radio Ga Ga' I had ever seen or heard. It was like a night at the opera...a fake opera that is."

Although Stephen had been to several impersonation concerts before, he had never met any of the performers, and was excited at the opportunity to meet Clyde Steenmuiller, the phoney band's lead singer.

"I was a little uncomfortable meeting the fake Freddie backstage," said Stephen. "But I was put at ease somewhat when Clyde told me he wasn't gay. Not that it would have affected his performance if he was..."

Some of the other performers Stephen had previously seen included: Nearly Neil, who "does a great Neil Diamond set", Barely Manilow, who "did a killer Mandy", and Totally Tina, who is "simply the best" as Tina Turner.

"I've been hugely into impersonator singers and bands since I was a teenager," said Stephen. "Except for Dread Zeppelin--those guys frighten me."

"You know, in all honesty, I've never seen a 'real' band perform," admitted Stephen. "I wanted to see ZZ Top back in 1985, but it was sold out. I ended up going to see my very first Elvis impersonator, and from that point I was hooked on the tribute stuff."

Stephen said his appreciation for tribute acts and imitation bands is absolute. He admits that he loves classic rock, but he thinks it sounds better when someone else is playing it.

"Anyone can make original music," added Stephen. "But it takes a real artist to do a convincing impersonation. Life imitates art, and imitators imitate the artists who are making art come to life."

Stephen is planning a holiday where he intends to see numerous other imitator bands, such as Almost ABBA, Slightly Styx, Maybe Metallica, Sorta Sting, and Kinda KISS.
