Likeness To Steve McQueen Leads To Celebrity Status

SEOUL, South Korea-- When Bart Klepke decided to travel to Seoul to teach English to Koreans, he never expected to be treated like a celebrity. Bart, a native of Wisconsin, was immediately recognized as being American "super movie star" Steve McQueen and has been reluctantly accepting the mantle of fame from his Asian admirers.

A South Korean resident recognizes "Steve McQueen" in a Seoul Internet cafe. The real Steve McQueen is inset.

Steve McQueen died in 1980 from lung cancer, but lives on through his movies.

"I guess they don't realize that Mr. McQueen passed away...over twenty years ago," said Bart, who thought he looked more like German action-hero Rutger Hauer, than the star of the original The Blob. "I understand though that [McQueen's] movies are very popular here, much as Jerry Lewis's are in France, and John Candy's are in the tiny island nation of Tuvalu."

Park Hon-Yong, a South Korean fan of American cinema, is convinced that Klepke is really McQueen.

"It is a very great pleasure to be meeting the great American star from The Great Escape and Bullitt," said Hon-Yong. "It is truly a much-savoured honour to be in the same presence of a Hollywood legend."

Bart was slightly embarrassed about the mistaken identity, at first, until people started offering to pay for his meals and his drinks.

"Well, I am a guest in this country...and I don't want to offend anyone," said Bart sheepishly. "I guess it's my duty to uphold the honour of American cinema. I'm sure the [Steve McQueen] estate won't mind too much If I sign a few autographs, take a few pictures, and sleep with one or two groupies."

Hon-Yong believes that he met legend John Wayne at a noodle house last May, and is fairly certain that he saw crooner Bing Crosby just before Christmas, shopping for a tobacco pipe at a local market.
