UNIVERSITY OF ALABAMA--Donnie Grace is only a sophomore at the University of Alabama, but already he's considered to be one of the game's top prospects. Donnie's talent and natural skill for the game has led him to a decision: he intends to forego the last two years of college and enter the draft this year.
"I think Donnie's ready," said coach Bill Frump, who also heads the computer sciences department. "He's got the gifts: raw talent, deft hands, and lightning-fast reflexes. These are skills that can't be taught. And you have to have commitment, devoting hundreds of hours to the game, literally spending your every waking moment honing your abilities, forsaking everything else--friends, family, education--just for the love of the game." Donnie's parents are hoping that he will complete his studies, but they won't stand in the way of his dream. "I want him to finish school of course," said Edna Grace. "He's going to need his education when he finishes playing. But right now he has a dream, and I won't stand between him and his game." Donnie's dad is supportive, and he isn't surprised how much Donnie's game has improved. "When he was younger, Donnie and I would spend hours every day playing Nintendo's RBI Baseball. He dropped out of little league so that he could improve his game. A couple of years later we sold all his ice hockey equipment and bought him his first PC, along with a copy of Electronic Arts' NHL '97. He's done really well. I'm proud of him." Donnie took to electronic sports immediately. In fact, he was a natural at every sports game he played. Donnie is so confident in his abilities, that he has asked to have his name included in the upcoming draft. "I don't know anyone who has the same heart and dedication to computer-simulated sports games as Donnie does," said Coach Frump. "With his pure skills, his remarkable dexterity, and his incredible hand-eye coordination I wouldn't be surprised to see him go in the first round!" His commitment
cannot be questioned. Donnie focuses on his game at every possible moment.
Before and after classes, every evening, and on weekends. He'll easily
commit 12 hours on Saturdays and Sundays. He's so dedicated his friends
don't ask him out anymore--unless it's for a tournament--not wanting to
get between Donnie and his game.
