But Everyone Gets A Purple Ribbon!
I've watched numerous hours of broadcasting on the CBC, and I think there has been more content about China, than actual events. However, whenever I do get to see Canadians participate in various swimming and rowing and other Olympic events, and I see them finish fourth or fifth or last, or whatever, I keep hearing the same thing over and over again: "Well, we're just happy to have been able to compete" and "I think that every Canadian deserves a medal just for getting here". WHAT???? Okay, it's all becoming quite clear to me now. It's the Canadian school systems that are to blame for this failure to medal in the 2008 Olympic Games. You see, it goes back ten or fifteen years to the days when parents began to complain on Sports Day that their children didn't get a gold ribbon for finishing first in some hula hoop obstacle race, or for beating the rest of the seven-year-olds in the 100 metre egg-on-a-spoon hurdles. ![]() Everyone gets a purple ribbon Yes, I believe this Purple Ribbon practice has completely destroyed individual competitive sports in Canada entirely, because hey, it's okay if you don't win, as long as you tried. Canadians (as individuals) must lack the fierce competitive fire that drives athletes from other countries because their Sports Days still award the winners, while Canadians are content to put everyone on a level playing field, and not crush little Joey's spirit and instead, embrace his mediocrity. He still has hopes of getting to the Olympics in the world-class balloon tossing event, but it doesn't matter if he wins. He's just glad for the chance to represent his country. IN MY ARMCHAIR-- I've been following the Olympic games in Beijing (on television, not actually from Beijing), and I must admit that I'm mildly disappointed in the lack of podium finishes (that is to say, none) by Canada, my home and native land. I say mildly, because there are plenty of beach volleyball matches to distract me from my moderate pain.

2008-08-1606:21:29 I blame it all on the judges!! This might sound like sour grapes but I saw a few competitions where a Chinese athlete completely messed up and when his routine was finished 10 billion and one Chinese stood up and applauded madly! You can imagine how loud that was, The score 9.5, 9.2, 4.3 (french judge), 8.9, 9.6 and here's yer gold for being a screw up but having the best applause factor!
Anyway wouldn't want to accuse anyone of CHEATING or anything but honestly .. when was the last time the Chinese won so many medals??
2008-08-1601:03:47 My fiancee says that the purple ribbon thing didn't start until most of these athletes were too old to get them, anyway.
2008-08-1519:48:27 For the record, the US is worse in that "everyone gets a ribbon" crap and they're doing just fine at the Olympics. Plus, how about thinking about the fact that no proper Canadian is going to go on TV and say "I'm better than those losers" "I should have won" "They must be taking steroids" yada yada yada.
2008-08-1516:47:25 That is horrible that they give every child a purple ribbon. I remember how much of a big deal it was for me and the other boys to go for those gold badges. They have destroyed the point of sports day.
I also think it is extremely irresponsible, numerous studies have shown that boys lose interest and under perform in school when there is a lack of opportunities for competing. The Canadian school system is sabotaging male education.
2008-08-1516:36:27 Yeah, um, summer olympics. Say that again when we're competing in ice and snow.
2008-08-1514:56:54 I totally agree with this, as funny as it sounds and I don't think this theory is so far-fetched. These mostly twenty-something athletes in Beijing are from generation where a person's self-esteem was considered more valuable than their actual achievement. Grow up and get into the real world where the winner gets the prize and everyone else gets nothing!

2008-08-1511:07:34 Dude, Germany is more socialist than you and even they are kicking ass. Third in medal count.
Well, at least you got all those natural resources. And at least your politicians let you use those natural resources. near as I can figure, US politicians are being bribed by foreign countries to keep us dependent on tyrants and dictators for our energy.
