BUCKINGHAM PALACE, ENGLAND– A spokesperson for her royal majesty issued a release earlier this week expressing the Queen’s approval for the new-style overtime format in the NHL. Prior to the 1999-2000 season, a team who lost in the five minute overtime period received no points. The new format gives two points to the overtime winner, and the loser still gets one point. The monarch went on to say that “Each team deserves one point inconsequential of the outcome of the game”. NHL commissioner Gary Bettman is a strong supporter of the O.T. loss format, and he believes the Queen’s endorsement will boost the game’s popularity even more. Although an eight metre high portrait of Elizabeth II hangs in the Winnipeg Arena, it is not known if she has ever been to an actual hockey game.
