Woman Just Wants A Little Courtesy
Kristy has been driving a courtesy-car for the past three days, and she is beginning to understand the prejudices of other drivers when they see courtesy-cars on the road. Kristy normally drives a 2002 Toyota 4-Runner, but she is having the leaky canopy replaced. She wasn't in an accident, but she's being treated like a roadside maniac--just because she's driving a car that identifies her as one. "You don't really appreciate how a courtesy-car driver feels until you've...driven a mile in their car," said Kristy, who has four years of safe driving, and was only once involved in an accident--which wasn't her fault. "Mind you, most of them deserve the stares, because they're probably terrible drivers." For the three days that Kristy has been driving the 2001 Toyota Corolla (covered with bright red "Thompson Automotive" decals), she has been given a wide berth. All other vehicles have been extremely careful, giving her all the driving space she needed. Cars have hesitated to pass her for fear she would make an unsignalled turn into their lane, and the vehicles behind her have allowed plenty of braking space, in case Kristy decided to make a sudden stop.
"I feel like I've been singled out," said Kristy. "I couldn't feel any more isolated if I had on a yellow star...which is the logo for Yellow Star Auto Body." Kristy wishes she had just borrowed her sister's nondescript Volkswagen Jetta, which would have allowed her to keep her driving anonymity. "I just want to fit in again," cried Kristy. "I don't want to be labeled or stereotyped. I don't want to be treated like a fender-bending bimbo, who can't travel two miles without using her rear-view as a make-up mirror." Kristy has to wait at least two more days before her 4-Runner will be ready. "Maybe I'll rent a car from Hertz or Budget," thought Kristy. "I won't get much more respect on the road, but at least I won't feel the shame."
