CFL Drops The Ball On Grey Cup Corporate Sponsorship
While the league is only now just considering the idea of accepting millions of dollars of corporate money for the opportunity to change the name of Canada's (second) most revered sports trophy, are Canadians ready to throw away tradition and accept the CFL's idea of changing the Grey Cup to the Molson Grey Cup or the Labatt's Blue Grey Cup? While the CFL's acting commissioner hasn't exactly said they're going to run with the ball on this idea, the idea of entitling the Grey Cup is a dishonour to the 98-year-old history of the game. However, like any other business, the CFL has to consider its operating expenses, and maybe with the extra cash, they can afford to keep more marquis players in Canada, and fill more seats at Canadian football stadiums. If they do decide to take advantage of the sponsorship opportunity, and go the way of the Labatt's Brier (that's curling talk), or the Bell Canadian Open (that's golf), here are some possible suggestions for renaming the historic championship name: Grecian Formula's "Just A Little Grey" CupNabob Tea's "Earl Grey Cup" Nike Bauer's Grey "Athletic Cup" The United Church Of Canada Presents "My Grey Cup Runneth Over" Turtle Wax "Not Quite As Grey As It Once Was" Cup Lipton's "Grey Cup O' Noodles" 7-Eleven Presents The Super Big Grey Gulp Cup Tim Horton's "Roll Up The Rim Of The Grey Cup To Win" While a name change for the Grey Cup may be inevitable in the coming years, we can take comfort in knowing at least the Stanley Cup will keep the same name if a certain tool and hardware company decides to sponsor the coveted hockey trophy.
