Michael Richards Challenges Writers To Make Light Of His N-Word Usage
But try as we might, we just couldn't find an angle that would make Mr. Kramer's ill-fated comedy heckling incident even the remotest bit funny. Even in the vast Seinfeldian world of quirkiness, we couldn't extract a nugget of "nothing" that we could use to bring sardonic laughter to a dark and disturbing topic. We explored the fragile history of the N-Word, and studied its verbage in modern pop culture. We studied the effects on generations of North Americans, taking into consideration the delicate and sensitive relationships between the different races that formed the great nation of the United States. The comedic pearls that we came up with were less appropriate than a one-hour O.J. Simpson variety show on network televison. Then we sat down and brainstormed. At first we thought that we could maybe suggest that he used the rapper version of the N-Word with an "az" on the end, but even that warm brotherly version of the word still sounded derogatory. Then we considered that maybe Michael had a rich African-American bloodline, and that he had the right to defend his use the N-Word...but that still didn't cause us to chuckle, chortle, or even snort. We doubt it would've worked even in that Seinfeld episode where he dressed like a pimp.We researched other black comedians, Richard Pryor, Eddie Murphy, Chris Rock, and Dave Chapelle, but their N-Word context was always different, and being edgy Black funnymen helped reinforce their use of the N-Word, whether their comedic material was funny or not. And still, we found no way to fuse all that black energy into Michael Richard's flimsy white defense. Finally, we gave up on the subject of Michael Richards, and turned to the warm inviting comedy waters of Britney Spears, Paris Hilton, and Pamela Anderson, where comedy material is a renewable resource. In the end, the only thing that we found that remotely resembled a humorous situation for Michael Richards was to change the N-Word to the C-Word, and have him offending an audience of chocolate-craving menstruating feminists. Now that would be funny! ![]() The Toque is the world leader in Canadian humour, parody, and satire!
