Prefab house proves less than fabulous
So Louis bought a do-it-yourself home-building kit from IKEA, which offered him a cost-effective choice to the traditional, professionally-built home. He ordered the modest two-bedroom unit from his local IKEA outlet, which was then delivered promptly, in “the biggest truck I’ve ever seen” according to Louis. Louis' first mistake was unpacking all of the 417 boxes at the same time, throwing it all into one pile on his newly-purchased lot, and littering his street with cardboard and bubble-wrap. “Of course the instructions were in Swedish, so I didn’t understand the advisory to open the boxes in numerical order," said Louis, "although I wouldn't know what Swedish numbers looked like. Of course, I found the English translations in the last box.” So far, Louis has managed to find most of the pieces necessary to assemble the natural pine-stained garage roof, but progress has been slow since there was only one Allen wrench included with the kit. “I’m hoping to get the ground floor finished before the snow falls”, said Louis, who is grateful he didn't buy the 4-bedroom Frigginhöm. |
